Overview

The EcoSystem Indicator Partnership (ESIP) is a committee of the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment. ESIP is developing indicators for the Gulf of Maine and integrating regional data for a new Web-based reporting system for marine ecosystem monitoring. Activities of ESIP initially center on convening regional practitioners in six indicator areas: coastal development, contaminants and pathogens, eutrophication, aquatic habitat, fisheries and aquaculture, and climate change.

Eutrophication Fact Sheet – Released May 2012!
ESIP is excited to announce the release of the fourth fact sheet in our series of seven indicator-specific fact sheets. Through the combined efforts of the eutrophication subcommittee, data providers, design team and ESIP Steering Committee, we’ve completed the Eutrophication Fact Sheet.

Aquatic Habitats Fact Sheet – Released October 2011!
ESIP is excited to announce the release of the third fact sheet in our series of seven indicator-specific fact sheets. Through the combined efforts of the aquatic habitats subcommittee, data providers, design team and ESIP Steering Committee, we’ve completed the Aquatic Habitats Fact Sheet.
The fact sheet provides an introduction to the aquatic habitats indicators selected by ESIP – eelgrass, salt marsh, and tidal restrictions- along with a snap shot of the indicator data.

Indicator Reporting Tool

A wealth of data has been collected from around the Gulf and is provided via the Indicator Reporting Tool. Users can graph and map various datasets along with importing data into their preferred programs.

Monitoring Map
The long-term goal of ESIP is to provide Web-based access to synthesized monitoring data collected in the Gulf of Maine and its watershed. Numerous government agencies and non-government organizations conduct monitoring programs in the region. The purpose of the ESIP Monitoring Map is to provide information regarding where monitoring programs exist in the Gulf of Maine.

Available Fact Sheets

The ESIP Steering Committee is pleased to announce the release of the first ESIP fact sheet. This initial fact sheet contains information on the selected indicators and both of our webtools. Many individuals assisted with the production of this document and we’re thankful for all of the effort and time dedicated by our ESIP team. If you would like to receive hard-copies of the document, please contact Christine Tilburg at ctilburg@securespeed.us.

To help restore Great Bay and improve its water quality, the Nature Conservancy coordinates the Oyster Conservationist Program, a partnership of several groups. The University of New Hampshire grows the baby oysters, or spat, at the University of New Hampshire Jackson Lab, and The Nature Conservancy trains volunteers and helps them grow oysters. In addition, the Coastal Conservation Association collects shells from local restaurants for the spat to grow on.
