Community of Practice Forum

Welcome to the Northeast and Maritimes Indicators Community of Practice Forum. This is a collaborative effort of many organizations in the region and this forum site is hosted by the Gulf of Maine Council.

This online community, through a variety of web resources and a network of practitioners, enables the region’s indicator and monitoring program staff to interact, learn together, and build relationships. In the process, we develop a sense of belonging and mutual commitment. Through this forum people get help with immediate problems, devise better solutions, and make better decisions.

There are two ways to participate in this forum. The first is that anyone can read the questions and comments that people make. The second is that you can make comments by registering on the site. Please click the “Click here to participate” link beneath each forum’s description to begin. You will need to register on the site, and you will then be able to contribute comments.

Instructions – At this time the Forum is focusing on the following two core issues that emerged at the 2011 Ecosystem Health Indicators Conference. We are using this forum to stimulate discussion on these two topics. We encourage you to register and contribute to this community of practice.

Data Information and Management

Critical issues we are working to address include accessing data (e.g., acquiring data from others and providing data to others); finding data (e.g., other indicators and datasets; historical and under-used data; data that was collected in the past, but is not being used or not known about); standardizing data collection and data sharing; storing data (e.g., a data repository to store/share data); and overcoming human and cultural barriers to accessing data (e.g., obtaining permission to acquire/use data).

Communication

Vital communication issues include messaging tools; evaluation methods and techniques (e.g., assessment methods, knowing if there was an impact); best practices (e.g., indicator products); case studies (e.g., application of indictors and results); and photos and visualizations (e.g., lending library of graphic resources).

About the Northeast Indicators Community of Practice

Formation and support for the Northeast Indicators Community of Practice was the primary recommendation stemming from the 2011 Ecosystem Health Indicators Conference, which was hosted by the Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea (COMPASS), SeaPlan (formerly known as the Massachusetts Ocean Partnership) in Boston, MA and the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal and Ocean Observing Systems (NERACOOS). Representatives from northeastern (Long Island Sound to the Gulf of Maine/Bay of Fundy) monitoring, indicator, and resource management programs attended the conference to discuss common challenges and collaborative opportunities.
