2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment. To celebrate the Council’s achievements and prepare for the next 25 years of action, the Council has planned several activities and events.
Facing Change in the Gulf of Maine Region describes the programs and activities undertaken by the Council to maintain the productivity and resilience of the Gulf Maine ecosystem and the human communities that depend on it. It challenges us all to take action.
The Council is hosting two events in conjunction with its June 2014 meeting and the Coastal Zone Canada 2014 conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia:
Get out and learn more about the Gulf of Maine! The Gulf of Maine Council and partner organizations have set up 25 geocache sites around the Gulf of Maine for you to explore for our 25th anniversary year. A limited edition geocache coin will reward the most intrepid geocachers. Click here for our main geocache page, launched in July 2014.
Don’t know anything about geocaching but want to try it? This website explains geocaching for beginners.
A multimedia presentation, “Voices of the Gulf of Maine,” will be visiting marine education and resource centers around the Gulf of Maine throughout 2014. The presentation visualizes the beautiful, yet fragile setting of the Gulf of Maine. The Gulf is one of the world’s most biologically productive environments and has supported subsistence fishing for millennia and commercial fishing for hundreds of years. How can we ensure it continues to be a productive, healthy ecosystem for generations to come?
Dates/locations to be announced.
