Streamside forests play important ecological roles by filtering pollutants and supporting wildlife. Protecting these functions in the Gulf of Maine watershed is widely recognized as vital to the health of terrestrial, aquatic, and ultimately marine ecosystems. Government agencies, non-government organizations, academic researchers, forestry companies, and other groups are working to understand how to properly design and implement riparian buffers that maintain these ecological functions.
