Gulf of Maine Times readers are our most important resource

Anne Donovan
Editor in Chief

Last year, the Gulf of Maine Council made it a priority to gather news about the Gulf of Maine from all five of the watershed's jurisdictions and bring it to those concerned about this valuable resource, from the policy maker in Washington DC and Ottawa to the concerned citizen spending his or her Saturday mornings gathering water samples at a local river. Hard as it is for us to believe, we will soon celebrate our first year of publication.

In our first three editions, we've informed you about partnerships - big and small - working to preserve the Gulf's resources. We've reported on policy decisions that affect the Gulf and its residents. We've introduced you to people who embrace their work on behalf of the Gulf and its communities as a mission. We've described innovative technologies that promote sustainable use of the Gulf's unique resources. And, we've presented complicated issues that remind us that the days of simple questions and easy answers are long behind us.

Even so, we've barely dipped our oars into the depths of what's worth knowing about the Gulf of Maine. We learn so much in producing each edition, and we certainly hope you find each one as informative to read. There truly is no shortage of stories to cover.

The Gulf of Maine Times is really the "neighborhood" paper for what amounts to a very large neighborhood - the Gulf of Maine watershed and those concerned about it. For that reason, we strive to cover stories that we think you will find meaningful and informative. You can help us do this.

Send us your story ideas. Give us your thoughts on the stories and editorial columns we've published. Share your observations on issues affecting the Gulf of Maine. Let us know if we're accomplishing what we're striving to do - keep our "neighborhood" informed about the important issues that affect the Gulf of Maine watershed and marine environment.

There are several ways you can contact us. First, take a moment to fill out the reader response form below. Then, write or E-mail us whenever you have an idea for a story or want to comment on an issue relating to the Gulf.

And don't forget to put us on your organization's mailing list. Sharing your experiences - your strategies, your successes, and what you've learned - may help others who are working on similar projects or are trying to accomplish the same goals.

We can all learn from each other. We look forward to hearing from you and learning more about how we can meet your need for information about our neighborhood, the Gulf of Maine.
