Photo by Maureen DeWire.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In early November, the New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC) brought more than 165 people to the University of Rhode Island\u2019s Narragansett Bay Campus for its 4th biennial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neosec.org\/previous-summits\/2012-ocean-literacy-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Literacy Summit<\/a>. With a focus on Ocean Literacy Principle 7, \u201cThe ocean is largely unexplored,\u201d this year\u2019s Summit was an opportunity for formal and informal educators, ocean scientists, and policymakers to make connections. To demonstrate the power of collaboration and communication among professionals in these sectors, all of the concurrent sessions featured scientists and educators as co-presenters.<\/p>\n<p><img title=\"esip\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/esip1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Summit registration prompted attendees to describe their role relative to ocean science education and research.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Via an evaluation survey, attendees report that their favorite aspects of the Summit were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c&#8230;reconnecting with contacts from other organizations and learning how ocean science topics are tackled throughout the New England region.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c&#8230;that scientists were co-presenting with educators.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c&#8230;integration of so many disciplines (academic, tech, research, etc) all in one place.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even the 2012 Summit sponsors \u2014 NOAA, Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems, Maine Coastal Program, URI\u2019s Graduate School of Oceanography, and the New England Aquarium \u2014 reflect the diversity of contributions to the effort.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong> A solid foundation for collaboration<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 2005, NEOSEC has been bringing together scientists, educators, and decisionmakers to advance ocean literacy in the region. The Collaborative\u2019s strength is that it recognizes the importance of science and education research and practice:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"201212esippic2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/201212esippic2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The result? Region-wide programs that leverage this connection: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neosec.org\/projects\/summer-science-in-new-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citizen science<\/a> by teenage summer campers, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neosec.org\/projects\/get-wet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">training for teachers<\/a> in leading field experiences, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neosec.org\/projects\/families-by-the-seaside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opportunities for families<\/a> to explore the shore together, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neosec.org\/projects\/scientist-educator-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workshops and pilot projects<\/a> demonstrating best practices for scientist-educator partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Opportunities on the horizon<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Summit immediately sparked new ideas and partnerships \u2014 which will result in more opportunities for teachers, scientists, and decisionmakers to connect and work together.
