A workshop report is also being prepared and will be available in early summer on the FSRS website and in hard copy upon request.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lobster Collector Project<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One of the projects highlighted at the workshop was the FSRS Lobster Collector Project, a collaborative project between the FSRS and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) formed to better understand the settlement of Stage-IV lobsters in deep and shallow areas at selected regions along the coast of Nova Scotia.\u00a0 Settlement collectors using a design from Richard Wahle and co-workers in the United States were first deployed in Lobster Bay (Argyle) in 2007.\u00a0 The objective of the project is to develop an indicator of settlement strength.\u00a0 The collectors are also a potential tool for biodiversity research, which enables us to study ecosystem interactions such as predation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-672\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-3.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-3-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The FSRS Lobster Collector Project is part of a larger international collaborative effort which has resulted in the largest scale synoptic view of lobster settlement ever conducted, from Rhode Island to Newfoundland.\u00a0 The regional projects are working together through the American Lobster Settlement Index (ALSI) Collaborative.\u00a0 Canadian ALSI collaborators, including the FSRS, DFO and the University of New Brunswick, are working with US ALSI collaborators led by Rick Wahle at the University of Maine to better understand the dynamics of settlement of American lobster and to develop an index on annual settlement that will be useful for predicting future recruitment into the lobster fishery.\u00a0 The work in Canada complements an index of lobster settlement in the US that has been measured in several locations for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-671\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-4.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-4-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>FSRS Celebrates 20 Years of Collaboration<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On February 20-21, 2013, following the collaborative lobster science workshop, the FSRS held it 20th Annual Conference, celebrating 20 years of collaboration between fishermen and scientists.\u00a0 Established in January 1994, the Fishermen and Scientists Research Society (FSRS), a non-profit organization, is an active partnership between fishermen and scientists.\u00a0 The FSRS was developed with the overall objectives to promote effective communication between fishermen, scientists and the general public, and to establish and maintain a network of fishermen and scientists capable of conducting collaborative research and collecting information relevant and necessary to the long-term sustainability of marine fisheries.\u00a0 The current membership consists of 489 members, including 277 fishermen members and 212 scientists\/other members.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_670\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-670\" class=\"size-full wp-image-670\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-2.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.gulfofmaine.org\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/esip-journal-entry-picture-2-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span4\">\n<p><em>Photo courtesy of Tricia Pearo<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the FSRS and its numerous research projects and communication\/outreach activities please check out our website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsrs.ns.ca\">www.fsrs.ns.ca<\/a> or contact Patty King, FSRS General Manager, at <a href=\"mailto:info@fsrs.ns.ca\">info@fsrs.ns.ca<\/a>, 902-876-1160.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"right-side-span4\" class=\"span4\">\n<h2>Other News in the Gulf of Maine &amp;
