Grand Falls is renowned as the highest falls (with a height of 23 m) in eastern North America after Montmorency Falls (83 m) near Québec City and Niagara Falls (57 m).

According to legend, Malabeam, a young Wolastoqiyik girl, sacrificed her life to save her village.  The Mohawks—foes of the Wolastoqiyik–had captured and threatened to kill her unless she guided them to her village.  To protect it, she led them over Grand Falls, where they all perished, including Malabeam.
